Volunteer Opportunities

If any of the below interest you, please complete the volunteer application below.

CLEANING CAT CONDOS
Some of our foster homes have more fosters than others. The people who are gracious enough to open their homes to large amounts of cats/kittens need help scrubbing kitty condos, litter boxes etc. Not very glamorous, but very necessary.

ENRICHMENT OF CATS AT PETSMART LOCATIONS
Being in a kitty condo 24/7 is not good for our rescues. We have volunteers go on a scheduled basis to PetSmart stores and work with our kitties. This includes holding, brushing, playing with, clipping nails and anything else that would make their journey to their new “forever home” more tolerable. An orientation process is involved for all volunteers who participate in volunteering with us at PetSmart stores.

TRANSPORTING ANIMALS TO PETSMART & BACK AND FORTH TO VET APPOINTMENTS
We have been very lucky to be included in the PetSmart Charities program and our animals are showcased at stores all the time. We need assistance picking up animals that are at our vets/foster homes and taking them to our partner PetSmart stores to be showcased for the day.

Occasionally one of our rescues becomes ill from the stress of being at a PetSmart location given the change in environment, unfamiliar noises and smells, etc. Stress can present in a number of ways. There are times when we need support in the form of one of our rescues being transported from a PetSmart to our vet for evaluation/medical care in these instances.

DONATION JAR DISTRIBUTION AND MAINTENANCE
Finding safe and suitable places that we can place a donation jar. It is important that the jar be checked at least twice a week with donations removed and sent to the proper board member. You will make sure the jars are clean and well maintained at all times. Ideas for attractive donation jars are also needed.

WORKING FUNDRAISERS
Second Chance survives solely on donations and aggressive fundraising activities. If you enjoy interacting with others and selling items to benefit the shelter animals, this is the one for you. Be an active part of our “event staff” when we host in person fundraisers.

TRANSPORTING, SETTING UP AND TEARING DOWN FOR FUNDRAISERS
When we do a fundraising event, there is always product that needs to be unpacked, setup for display, taken down and driven back to the storage area. We greatly appreciate anyone that may be willing to assist in this area. This is great for people who don’t like to interact with the public but still want to help in some way.

COMPUTER RESEARCH
The internet is a goldmine of ideas for fundraising, donation opportunities from companies (MilkBone, Purina etc.), available grants for shelters and affiliate programs for shelters. If you have the time to surf, surf for the animals!

SOLICITATION OF MONEY AND PRODUCT DONATIONS
When we do an event such as our annual basket raffle, we are always looking for assistance when it comes to soliciting donations for raffle items, food donations, and even sponsors for the event!

CAT/KITTEN FOSTERING
As an all-volunteer, foster based rescue group we maintain a strong network of volunteers who wear many hats. Many of our volunteers double as foster parents to our rescues. Fostering is an important part of our rescue philosophy because not only does in home fostering make for a more socialized animal, we also know where and where not to place the animal when it becomes ready for adoption. Fostering is a big commitment as it includes taking an additional animal into your home for an indefinite amount of time. All animals are fully vet checked before they are placed out for foster. If you are interested in fostering for Second Chance, please complete a foster application here.
